Creative Talents and Writing

We all bring different creative talents here to our classroom. Write about how your creative outlets and expressions intersect with your writing. You can focus on writing for this class and for other types of writing both inside and outside of Columbia.

  1. When writing I would say my expressions influence what I want to write about. If I'm angry I'll write a damn good paper. If I'm happy I'll write a good paper but it will be more optimistic with a positive influence.

  2. Although I plan on becoming a videogame designer, I feel like my passion for music influences my writing a lot more. I feel like music is a way to interupt or express feeling. I see writing and music are similiar in this way because writing can do the same thing. I feel like it's an easy switch to be able to express yourself through writing as it is through music and I feel like that helps me alot in all of my writings.

  3. I think some of my best writing work came out of me in the reading response number 3 were we talked about how our talents relate to a charter in the book we are reading. I related to them by saying both or talents came from starting from scratch and doing what we love. I really was able to express myself and really open myself up because i got to talk about what interests me; in my case, video game design. it seemed like i could have talked forever about what had gotten me interested in it and how i have seen myself improve and become interested in different aspects of it over the years. so i think that our creative outlets are expressed the most in our writing when we are talking about something we have very strong feelings for are are interested in strongly about something.

  4. I think my imagination & every day life has aa major influence over how I write papers. Say for instence, theres a paper assigned where I have to use my imagination. I will probably do pretty good on that, where as something that is boring & doesnt strike my interest, I would probably do terrible on it.

  7. When I write I take my mind to a whole other level of how I usually think. I allow my mind to wonder. Just like writing, dance is a big outlet in my life. I when I dance, I move to express myself. I allow my body to move into a whole different universe. I am able to clear my mind of all things that tends to bother me when I do these things. Dancing is not only one of my talents, but its a passion. Writing is not only a skill, its my desire. This applies to all styles of dancing and writing that I do. It is not one style of dance that I do, nor one style of writing that does not bring me the same satisfaction. Writing in comparison to dancing is so closely related.I feel as if I have to allow my mind and body to work, to flow, to create a work of art. I will write my future and dance my way to destiny.

  8. i have to be truly inspired to write a excellent paper. i am a creative writer! it is what i do, it is just that my work latey has not been up to my standards because i suffer from (SWB) severe writers block and it really sucks. i am currently trying to write and organize this book and its not going so well. i have the ideas and everything like that, i just cant create a beginning that i feel is strong enough to engage my reader. i also cant choose which way to start it either. alot of answers that i have to come up with because i want it to be good. i want it to be epic and i want my reader to love it!!!

  9. When writing a paper I try to think of how the reader would be able to relate to what I wrote. I try to keep in mind that everyone doesnt always have the same interest in certain things and that I need to accomodate multiple personalities and interest. While doing that also keeping in mind that it has to be a paper that I'm proud of and can respond effectively to the feedback I recieve.

Tay and class, I wondered how you guys are able to find inspiration to write about something you aren't as interested in or maybe you feel uncomfortable with. I remember I had to write a paper on the Rre Raphaelites in grad school and the topic bored me so much, I had a hard time finding the energy and drive to write. What techniques do you use in this type of circumstance?

  12. When I get ready to sit down, and write a paper the first thing I do is read the question or statement to see what all it intails, after i do that I do it again. The reason I read it several times is so I know I fully understand the concept of what im getting ready to write about. After I know that I understand the assignment, I begin thinking about all the different ways I could approach it. While I am going through that procedure that is when most of my creative ideas come, and i jot them down before i forget. Then I put them all together and fill in my gaps. I feel like I had the ability to write like this all along, it just wasn't as well structured. I think I really got a chance to take my writing to the next level this summer by being in the studio literally everyday, and almost living in it to a certain extent. I had never produced so many songs in such a short period of time. By me doing all of that writing I think it better prepared me for this class, and I think this class has also improved my writing in many different ways.

  13. well Kristen when I do not like a topic as much as others. I find ways to relate it to something that I do enjoy and try to make something work based off of that, just like I use to do with subjects in school. I didnt like math. So I thought about ways that it was so helpful in the real world. I found that it was quite helpful when I put it into that perspective.

  14. For a paper im not interested in I try to relate it to something I am interested in and then compare the two in my paper. For example I had a book report on Hamlet but I liked the book Macbeth more so I compared the two characters in my report while meeting the requirements of the paper.

  17. When I'm faced with writing a topic that I dont care much for I remind myself that it doesnt matter whether I like it or not, but that if I dont complete the assignment proplerly that my grade wont like it. When put in that perspective I become exceptionally motivated.

  18. When I get the questions of what I need to write about I try my best to explin the answer from what I already know of the topic or just simply try to relate it so something that I know of that is in a different way of explaining what I think is the right answer to the question.
