Local question 2

In the True Notebook. The author wrote a lot with slang to show the character of some of these young guys in the story. Do you think that the way he has portrayed teens to talk is common in the teens society today?

  1. YES, I FEEL THAT HE PORTRAYED TEENS TO TALK IS COMMON IN THE TEENS TODAY BECAUSE, THEIR WRITING IN THEIR NOTEBOOKS IS A GREAT WAY TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES.

  2. I think the way the author portrayed the characters very realistically to how teens talk today. not only does it make the dialogue sound like how some teens talk and use slang but it also really fleshes out the characters and makes you think of them as more of a real person instead of just as someone in a book.

  3. I beleive the author does do a very good job in portraying who his characters are. The slang they use is not what all teens use however all teens use some kind of slang terms weither they realize it or not. It gives them life and shows they are all just kids. I do think he is right to use this because teens in common day society do use forms of slang regularly.

  4. When I read that I felt like he was portraying those teenagers stereotypically in a sence of them being in that particular sutuation and the kind of people that would be in it. But yeah, the way he portrayed the teen's communicational skills is similar to how urban teens talk amongst eachother today.

  7. Man, those are some good responses. I didnt know if I felt that he had portrayed them as being to bad, or talking with to much slang, because I do know some teens that talk like that, but just not that bad. At the same time I guess it depends on your environment and the people you are surrounded by

  8. The way teens are portrayed today is shown all across media and culture. I think that there are certain teens that fit the stereotypes perfectly, and some that don't. I guess it depends on maturity levels. As you grow older your personality and ideals might change.
Anyway, getting off topic...teens these days are the generation of touch screen cellphones, twitter, facebook, video games, etc. People who are older think of them as texting fiends. Addicted to the internet, and video gaming. This new technology has a great impact on the way some teens will speak, and type.

  9. I believe slang will always be common amongst teens & children as whole. The juvenile delinquints stories in the book where real & raw.So I believe the authors portrayal of the Juveniles was well written. Because alot of teens from similar backrounds may use the same language & probably share similar stories as the characters in the book. After someone from that backround & lifestyle reads a couple of pages of the book, they would probably be interested in reading the whole book, based on how they relate to the characters characteristics & personalitys.

  10. From what I'm reading from all of your responses in "The True Notebook" the characters use slang as dialogue. If thats the case then the author hit the center of the target. Everywhere we go there is some sort of slang that puts a thin line between proper english and slang. I'm not judging of course because that falls under the category of being a "Product Of Your Environment". We all have some sort of slang we use we just can't realize it. (Was that good? Haha)

  11. I believe that the way the teens speech was portrayed in this book was pretty accurate considering thier living conditions. Meaning that if you grow up around people that use profanity & slang often, you will most likey do the same as you get older. I also think that by him having the teens articulate this way, more teens might be able to relate and better understand the story.

  12. i think teens are portrayed more harshly in the media than in real life. many cultures characterizes todays teens as wild and crazy, which is necessarily not true. we are judged very harshly in the world. not saying that teens are little angels who do nothing wrong, not saying that. what i am saying is that todays teenagers are not as bad as people make. we just are misunderstood. most teenagers today have their own way of thinking, which may make us look alittle rebellious. we are our own people. we have an "us against the world mentality" and that makes us strong. we talk how we know.

  13. From what I hear about this story its portraying teens but its because some of bad young teens that make the rong choices in like go to jail so maybe thats why the have the slang in the book but most teens are diffent in most ways but when speeking most ways they use of words are the same. Most teen lives in the same or diffent inverment and are raised diffently so not nessacerly all teens have the same slang.
