Taken for granted

In the book "True Notebooks" the boys write about things that they miss while there locked away from society. When reading this I realize all the things that I take for granted in my life. If you were locked away, like these boys, what would you miss and what do you take for granted?

  1. If I were locked away I would definately miss my loved ones, and life. When your locked away life stops for you, but it also continues outside of those bars. Prison and Juvenile centers have messed up people's lives. If you stay positive and off the streets good things can come about. Thats my opinion.

  2. Well first off i think i would miss my family the most. after being with them for 18 years now i cant image what it would be like if i suddenly could not see them anymore for years. i think i take eating good meals for granted. the boys in the book eat really bad lunch. i have the freedom to eat what and where i want, and i definitely take that for granted. I take a lot of recreational activities for granted too, such as my computer, listening to music and playing Xbox. things like those and or general freedoms taken away would leave us with very little left to us. i can see how the boys take a lot of simple things for granted.

  3. Very nice question. This question just made me think about being back home. Though I am not locked up, I am away from the things that I miss the most. Being away from family, friends and the people that understands me the most, makes it easy for me to think about if I didnt have the things in my life that I have. It hurts to think about that possibility. When I think about this question, it makes me realize how much I take life for granted. I usually just live life not focusing on tomorrow, but once in a while I should reflect on life as a whole.

  4. If I was incarcerated,I would probably miss my family & time. I think when where forced to do something in life, when realize that we take things for granted. Time is something that everybody takes for granted. Because we can never get time back, once its gone we cant get reimbursed for it.

  5. If I was locked up like the boys in "True Notebooks" there are a lot of different things I wouild miss. Another thing I miss if I was incarcerated is being able to go to the studio and be able to record & engineer songs. I would also miss being able to listen to music all day and hanging out with my friends. I would miss being able to go and do shows, but I think the thing I would miss the most is being able to see my family when ever I wanted.

  6. If I was locked away first and foremost I would miss my family. Next, would inevitably be my freedom. What I take for granted most at this point is my ability to get what I want. By that I mean I know how far some people will go for me and because of that I push it to the limit. I know that I shouldnt but I'm so use to it its almost like I dont know any other way. But I know I have to change and when you know better you do better so I know I'll get it right.. evetually. Plus with this new obligation of school and independent housing I'm sure I wont have a choice.

  7. I would miss really simple things: like having a pet, making coffee in the morning, even grading papers, and riding the CTA. Oh and having a pen so that I could write; I would really miss doing that. I am living far from most of my family, so as long as I could call and write them, it would be alright.

I was curious what people would do if they were locked up. I imagine I would read every book I couldn't read while I was busy with a job and whatnot. I'm assuming books are allowed at least? Malcolm X has an autobiography on himself where he talks about self-educating himself in prison so he can be a better writer. It is in a collection of writing called Rereading America: http://www.amazon.com/Rereading-America-Cultural-Contexts-Critical/dp/0312405545

  11. I would miss my family alot because I want to stay with them mostly through problems that may happen in the future because I want to be the one they come to if they ever have a problem so I can help in anyway possible. I will miss my best friends that I have because I mostly talk to them whenever I have a problem for there opinion. I will really be mad knowing I could not live the life of my dreams. There are some stuff I take for granted now but when I think of myself in that situation in jail I would not. I would also miss out on the girl I want to be with in the future....but am not in that problem and will hope it will never happen.

  12. Oh no, he didn't read it. Rereading America is a book that collects "good" writing, and puts it together in an anthology that can be taught in class. When you guys take Writing and Rhetoric I, it is one of the books some of the teachers at Columbia College teach.

  13. What if you weren't locked up, but something happened so that you lost your home, your family, and other things that are important to you. I just read this: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129100901
and it talks about how many died because of a landslide in China. I can't imagine how awful it would be to lose so much; it would be like being in prison without having done anything.
